The head representative of Russian pop-rock, the angel-devil Ilya Lagutenko has been teasing people so long with the release of a new masterpiece that by the time the album was actually released, all the enthusiasm had already been used up. And the presented masterpiece turned out to be more modest than we all expected. The thoughtful, philosophical and at the same time popular-genre material is too different from the group's previous music to make any super-hits (as Lagutenko's godfather, Leonid Burlakov, expected), but then again it won't be able to not make any super-hits.
Recorded and edited in far-away England, the album came out almost purposefully unstylish and even a little retro- "Not Very" and "Faster and Fast" could well have been written in the previous decade, if not for the sound technology. The back cover is laced with studio names which all would cause the heart of any Russian music fan to skip a beat, like the Beatles' Abbey Road and Peter Gabriel's Real World. But where are the results? "No Karnaval" gets tiring in the first minute of its whining. "Bride?" is surprisingly modest, even though it was marketed to be the opposite, and "My Singer" overdoes it with the bravura.... Probably, we will just have to agree that Mummy is just like that now, it just happened that way, and that there won't be another "Sea Album."
Ilya Lagutenko's Address to his Listeners:
We are not asking you to pay for listening to our songs in MP3 format, but we know that you know that everything has its price. And we had to pay quite a bit for you to have an opportunity to listen to our new songs. If you are able, please donate to the following account the equivalent of the tracks that you listened to (at 20 cents per track, translated into rubles according to the rate of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation). This will help us continue to provide you with more songs in the future. We believe in you!!!

Подробности из жизни:
Although some may take this as an exaggeration, it always seemed to me that there was something more complex about Mummy Troll and Ilya Lagutenko than what appeared on the surface of his songs. It's not that he has a particularly exciting biography, however, nor does the group really stray far beyond the standards of Russian pop. But if you listen closely to the lyrics, you realize there has to be some sort of reason, or at least justification for either their esoteric showiness, or imaginative eccentricity (depending on your point of view). You just don't know where to look for that justification. When I found out that by the time he reached the status he knows today, Lagutenko had already obtained a diploma in African and Eastern Studies from the Far East State Universtiy in Vladivostok, and had lived in China for a while (which I'm sure did wonders to his lexicon and his concept of vocabulary), I was able to place an origin to some of the wildest imagery in his songs. Not that…
