SPICE GIRLS  Spice Girls Lose 1.6 Million Dollars

The Supreme Court of London passed a decision in favor of the Italian motorcycle company "Aprilia" in its case against the Spice Girls. The singers (including Jerry Hallywell who recently started her own solo career) are to pay the plaintiff 434 thousand sterling pounds (about 707 thousand dollars). The total losses of the group as a result of this court decision will reach a million pounds (1.6 million dollars).

Hallywell and the Spice Girls were indicted for "breaking a contract with sponsors." In 1998 the group signed a contract with "Aprilia" for an ad of the new scooter "Spice Sonic." The company made some very large investments to release this model, which features all the names of the Spice Girls, on the market. Several photographs and posters of the model surrounded by the five singers were ordered and distributed all over Europe.

However, three weeks after the contract was signed, in March of 1998, Jerry Hallywell left the Spice Girls. This led to the end of the advertising campaign of the scooter. "Aprilia" proved in court that the Spice Girls knew about Halliwell's departure in advance, but didn't say anything about purposefully so that they would not lose the support of the sponsors, which made possible several European tours, the cost of which totaled out to be 500 thousand pounds (815 thousand dollars).
