The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) have announced that The
Beatles were the top-selling band of the century. They've sold over 100 million
records in the USA alone, over sixty million of which cover just five albums,
Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, the White Album, Abbey Road and the two
singles compilation albums, '1962-1966' and '1967-1970'. Country artist Garth
Brooks (almost 90 million albums in the States) and Barbra Streisand (over 60
million) were the century's biggest selling solo artists. Biggest selling
single was Elton John's tribute to the Princess of Wales, 'Candle in the Wind',
formerly a tribute to Marilyn Monroe. The best selling album ever is the Eagles
'Greatest Hits'. The best selling movie soundtrack was 'The Bodyguard', with
Whitney Houston's 'I Will Always Love You'. Besides, Whitney Houston was the
best selling R&B artist. Elvis Presley is credited with the highest number of
Gold and platinum status albums (77) and stands as the biggest selling male
rock artist, overall.
