В июне 1964 года некая группа Vendors из Волверхэмптона, в состав которой входили гитарист Дейв Хилл и ударник Дон Пауэлл, записала свою первую демонстрационку. Ну и что? - скажете вы. А то, что несколько позже, с приходом новых музыкантов - поющего гитариста Невилла "Нодди" Холдера (род. 15 июня 1950 года) и периодически юзающего скрипку басиста Джимми Ли (род. 14 июня 1952 года) - группа, изменив название на Slade согласно тогдашней моде на стиль "bubble gum", взорвала этот стиль изнутри своим бескомпромиссным рок-н-роллом.
С приходом Холдера и Ли группа обрела мощный авторский тандем, выдающий на гора один боевик за другим. Первый успех, правда, группе принесла "черезтридцатьтризабораногузадерищенская" кавер-версия старого хита Литл Ричарда "Get Down & Get With It", выпущенная на сингле в июне 1971 года.
Чуть позже группа уверенно войдёт в высшие эшелоны британского глэм-рока.
