Installation of microphones around the stage and in the walls of New York State Theater, the residence of New York City Opera, stirred up a storm of controversial opinions. Vast majority share the opinion that (in words of the editor of Opera News magazine) "the voices must sound the way God and voice teacher made them". Any kind of amplification is regarded as immoral.
