Levin is one of the most interesting contemporary russian poets. And this does not allow him to become an interesting singer. He is a better poet than a composer and his arrangements are worse than his music. But all this happens just because he is a very good poet. If you do not know russian you have no reason to listen to Levin's songs. If you know russian, you should better read his verses (fortunately this album has a booklet where you can read them). Levin's French Rabbit is definitely a colleague of Lewis Carrol's White Rabbit and a relative of Alain Miln's Rabbit (some heroes of Levin's poetry are close to Carrol's Jabberwocky and Miln's Heffalump.) The word 'Lingvoplastics' (it's the title of one of Levin's books) describes exactly what he's doing with the language: he's playing with it, inventing new words and renovating old ones. 'My soul is divided into two unfriendly parts, musical and poetic - says Levin. - And it's impossible for them to coexist peacefully'.

We can feel it. Levin's music is rather standard (though it is composed 'with the participation of W.A.Mozart, L.V.Beethoven and some other authors', as said in the booklet), with standard computer arrangement (all done by Levin himself). When he is accompanying himself on a guitar without trying to make something extraordinary, the result is more satisfying. Well, maybe he should record his songs with the help of a symphonical orchestra. Maybe this would be an appropriate accompaniment for his verses.
