Образованный в 1966 году под названием Sweet Shop, этот квартет первое
время ориентировался на исполнение мелодичного биг-бита и бабл-гам. После
нескольких проб вокалист Брайан Конолли, басист Стив Прист и
ударник Мик Такер приняли на роль соло-гитариста Энди Скотта.
Первыми хитами группы стали сочинённые для неё авторским дуэтом Чинна и
Чепмена бабл-гам-безделицы "Chop Chop", "Co-Co" и
"Funny Funny", а также кавер-версия песни Lovin` Spoonful
"Daydream" из одноимённого фильма Вуди Аллена.
К началу 70-х годов группа неожиданно перешла от исполнения простеньких
поп-шлягеров к мощному хард-року. По примеру Джимми Пейджа заказавший
себе двухгриффовый Les Paul Скотт первое время почти слепо копировал манеру
первого хард-рокового гитариста (включая даже игру виолончельным смычком!).
Однако впоследствии музыканты группы нашли свой собственный стиль в синтезе
модной "тяжести" и проверенной временем мелодичности, став таким
